The Gumbo Foundation is cooking for a cause in perfectly seasoned Opelousas and Sunshine will be one of the teams! Every year, the foundation rounds up area chefs who are willing to compete for “best gumbo”, an honor held high in Louisiana. Event chefs and volunteers are working hard for the benefactor of the event proceeds, a local child in need. All the proceeds from the cook-off benefit a child and family who are burdened with medical and related expenses.

This year, for the 14th Annual Gumbo Cook-Off, proceeds benefit A’Vree Greene. She was diagnosed with liposarcoma of the thigh in February 2019 and is being treated at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. You can join the Gumbo Foundation’s efforts by sampling gumbo at the cook-off and bidding in the silent and live auctions.

There will also be a kid’s activity area with face painting and costumed characters, while parents can enjoy dancing and live music. Prizes are awarded for first place champion, second place, and third place. In addition, a specially designed Gumbo Cook-Off Champion Paddle will be passed from the reigning champ to a new contender. Winners of the cook-off will be announced at 4 pm.
