John Deere compact construction equipment lineupCompact construction equipment continues to grow in popularity, and it’s not hard to see why. Budget-friendly prices, compact sizes, and versatile attachments make these workhorses appealing to homeowners, landscapers, and contractors of all scales. Whether you’re a soon-to-be first-time owner or you’re looking to add on to your fleet, it’s important to stay informed. Here are answers to some common questions we get asked about our compact construction equipment here at Sunshine Quality Solutions.

Is compact-sized equipment better than standard-sized equipment?

Just like it is with any other machinery, the right choice always boils down to the task at hand. While standard-sized equipment typically offers stronger power and more capabilities, not every job requires maximum amounts of power.

Compact construction equipment is a great choice for all types of operations. Not only are customers drawn to their lower prices, but they also find their smaller sizes a huge benefit. Lighter weights, slimmer widths, and lower heights make compact equipment a lot easier to transport and store. The option to load your skid steer into the back of a pickup truck or store your compact excavator easily in the garage makes owning equipment a lot more convenient and less expensive.

Compact construction equipment can also go where standard-sizes can’t. This ability to fit under low ceilings and maneuver through tight spaces opens up new potentials to take on.

What’s the difference between a skid steer and a compact track loader?

Although both are commonly referred to as “skid steers”, the only real differences between these two workhorses are how they move and what they move on. Skid steers operate on four maneuverable wheels, giving them a zero-turn radius. With faster speeds and the ability to make quick turns, a skid steer’s tires are also better suited for harder, smoother surfaces like concrete and asphalt.

Because compact track loaders operate on a tough set of tracks, they are the best choice for taking on uneven terrains and light slopes. While they aren’t as diligent on hard surfaces as skid steers are, compact track loaders do offer better stability, more operator comfort, and tougher tracks. Do I need a radial lift or a vertical lift on my skid steer?

Ever wonder why some John Deere skid steer models end in  “GR” while others just end in “R”? Skid steers have two different types of lift: radial and vertical. Radial lift swings out in an arc before reaching its peak height while vertical lift raises straight up and down.

While both types perform the same job, there are certain applications that each performs better than the other. If you’re looking for strength and stability during jobs like loading and backfilling, a radial lift (GR) may be your best solution. If you are looking for versatility to take on various jobs like handling, landscaping, and loading, a vertical lift (G) may be the perfect fit for you.

If you aren’t sure which lift matches your goals, then give our team a call. We’ll be happy to help you make a decision!

How do I choose the best model for me?

Because we offer multiple options for varying applications, we often get asked which model is the best choice. While each model offers a high level of potential, it’s important you invest in the best possible choice for your operation. There are a few different factors to consider while shopping for equipment.

  1. The specs. First things first: what does your operation look like? Do you need a smaller machine to work in tight spaces? What types of jobs will you perform? How heavy of material do you plan to deal with? When you have a good idea of this scale you’ll have a better idea when it comes to choosing horsepower, operating weights, and other machine-specific specifications. If you still aren’t sure, our team can help you decide.
  2. The features. Are you looking for simple functionality or do you want to take a step further with access to certain bells and whistles? While smaller compact models offer durable and consistent performance, larger models include exclusive features like optimized roller space, EH boom performance packages, two-speed drivetrains, and in-cab monitors.
  3. The price. The more weight and features added on, the higher the price tag will be. While all of John Deere’s construction equipment offers incredible value, there still is quite a large price range you can choose from. Find a balance between the specs and features that best fit your operation and your operation’s budget.

What are the best attachments for compact construction equipment?
