Hunting is a pastime enjoyed by many throughout Louisiana. An activity that has bonded families and friends over the ages, deer hunting allows the participant a sustainable way to know exactly where their meat is sourced.
Johnny Holifield long dreamed of developing his own high fence white tail deer hunting property to help others participate in this longstanding tradition by providing an experience that visitors will never forget.
In 2020, he saw this dream start to take shape when he broke ground on Bush Hill Plantation. Bush Hill Plantation is an approximately one thousand-acre property where visitors will one day come to hunt whitetail deer in St. Francisville, Louisiana.
An area of this size requires a lot of upkeep. Johnny cites Louisiana weather as one of his team’s most prevalent challenges as they work to plant crops in the appropriate timeframe to result in the best food source for the deer on his land.
“We’re constantly planting, bush hogging, disking, cutting grass…I mean it’s work, work, work. It’s a full-time job,” he says.
Johnny’s experience with Sunshine actually began earlier in his career when he started a specialty welding company in 2014. When the need arose for tractors at this operation, he knew exactly who to call.
“I reached out to Rooney at Sunshine and since then, Rooney has been like my rock,” says Johnny. “I’ve always loved John Deere products and when I need something, Rooney is my first call.”
In addition to tractors like his John Deere 6110M and various compact utility tractors, Johnny appreciates the versatility provided by the many implements and attachments offered by John Deere. His team frequently uses a rotary cutter, disk and no-till drill just to name a few.
Last but not least, a John Deere Gator Utility Vehicle comes in handy when you have this much ground to cover.
“Being out here in nature with your friends, your family, your kids…no other memories can compare to those,” says Johnny. “Picking up limbs, cutting grass, whatever we’re doing can form a bond.”
