Nothing says springtime like the smell of freshly-cut grass, especially when that grass is cut with a John Deere lawn mower

Make sure your John Deere lawn mower keeps running to the best of its ability all season long by following a few simple maintenance tips.

First things first, we should mention that John Deere offers a variety of lawn mowers. These include the below, which also can be equipped with a variety of attachments.

The maintenance tips in this blog are appropriate for each of the John Deere mowers listed above. These maintenance tips will help ensure that your mower is ready to work this spring and beyond!

Check Your Blades

Dull blades are inefficient and can even potentially be dangerous. As if that’s not enough motivation to keep your blades in check, a dull blade can also lead to an uneven cut or brown grass.

Mower blades should be sharpened annually, at a minimum. It’s important to remove your blade from your lawn mower before sharpening. If your blade is truly worse for wear, it may be time to replace it.

Change Your Lawn Mower’s Oil

It’s important to change your oil after every 25-50 hours of use to avoid complications with your machine. Drain and replace the oil filter regularly as needed.

Clean the Underside of Your John Deere Mower

Taking the time to regularly clean or blow any debris from the underside of your John Deere mower is ideal, but if that’s not practical, making this effort once per year can make a big difference in the life of your machine. The best time to do this is when you have taken the blade off for sharpening or replacement. Once your machine is clear of debris, wax can be applied to discourage grass from sticking to the surface in the future.

Check Your Tire Pressure

A quick visual inspection can tell you if the pressure in your tires is dramatically low, but actually checking your tire pressure is the only foolproof way to ensure things are as they should be here. Check to see that your tire pressure is correct before every mow. This will help elongate the life of your tires and avoid any incidents related to incorrect tire pressure.

Take the guesswork out of much of your mower maintenance with a Home Maintenance Kit from John Deere. These kits come equipped with the basics you’ll need for John Deere lawn mower maintenance, including 2 quarts of oil, an oil filter, a fuel filter, an air filter, air pre-cleaner (if applicable) and spark plug(s).
